May Hunt II 2017
As he completed that sentence here came the two rams running back over the hill towards us…
Randy hunted with us in May this year and his main animal he wanted was an Oribi.
Oribi are indigenous to the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape, they are also found in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and small populations persist in the north eastern Free State and Swaziland. This little antelope looks a lot larger in size out in the veld compared to once you have shot one, reason for this is they have a long, slender neck and legs.
The first afternoon we took our time and spotted/glassed a lot to observe the Oribi and to be very selective in the Oribi that we were wanting to shoot. We did not get one that afternoon. The very next morning we arrived at the Coastal property and there was mist everywhere. As much as this was a disadvantage it worked as a brilliant advantage to us as well by helping us to stalk and get in position without being noticed by the many eyes around. Once we were in position the mist started to lift, however the ram we wanted to shoot was lying down so we waited for him to make his move and get up.
Out of the blue the ram and his ewe jumped up and took off. Why we have no idea, and just like that our stalk and patient waiting was gone with him running over the hill. Juan told Randy that we must just stay in position as the Oribi are very territorial and could make their way back to us. As he completed that sentence here came two rams running back over the hill to us… With a few discussions and contemplating the correct ram was identified and put in the cross hairs. As soon as he gave Randy the opportunity to get a shot in he was down.
The next few days we hunted Warthog culls and a cull Red Hartebeest. We tried our luck to hunt a free range Bushbuck on a property near to the lodge but luck was not on our side for this day.
All in all we had a fantastic hunt with Randy and hope to hunt with him again soon as he is wanting to complete his Tiny 10 list…
